Goose-a-palooza at Chinatown’s Golden Century

Despite Twittering like a court clerk typist on crack, I’d yet to have the privilege of dining with the Sydney blogging community until last night’s Goosefest 2010 shindig at Golden Century Seafood. The night was organised by Tim Elwin, who scrapped a lucrative mobile technology career to pursue his love of quality meats. These days he runs Urban Food Market, an online site that wholesales top cuts like real-deal Mirragong grass-fed wagyu (not the barely passable wagyu that seems to be at every pub these day) and saltbush lamb. And luckily for home pan-rattlers like me, he’s now selling smaller portions on the weekend Danks Street markets in Waterloo.

Tim put out a call on Twitter for Goosefest 2010, for which he was rounding up a number of birds from Thirlmere – a quality poultry provider in NSW that’s a regular at the Eveleigh Markets and elsewhere – and convinced the fine folks at Golden Century Seafood to cook it for us food fanatics. Somehow, despite my frenetic dining schedule and food career, I’d never eaten goose, so it was an opportunity to relish. It also didn’t hurt that the whole feast was $40 for a total of ten shared dishes:

  1. Cold-cut BBQ meats platter
  2. Roast goose
  3. Prawns sautéed Sichuan style
  4. Scallops sautéed with honey beans
  5. Steamed live fish (barramundi, I think)
  6. Peipa tofu
  7. Beef with black pepper
  8. Crispy skinned chicken
  9. Poached vegetables with oyster sauce
  10. Goose fried rice

Tim acquired a taste for roast goose while living in Hong Kong, and he was keen to share the delicacy with his fellow food tweeps. “Goose meat is much sweeter than duck,” he told me, as he explained that our geese were cooked in masterstock for 24 hours, then had their skin crisped while being stood vertically and having oil repeatedly poured over them. There’s probably more to it than that, but that’s about all I picked up amid the clanging plates, excitable food chatter and eager chopstick shovelling.

The funniest part of meeting food bloggers is that people tell you their name, see the blank stare on your face, then tell you their Twitter handle. “Oh, that’s YOU!” was the common response. It was like each of us was Clark Kent, which was met with muted interest until we showed off the social networking Superman suit.

    now we just need to decide whether the next one is another cuisine for Goose or we go for a different beast!
